Our Trustees

John Stewart, Chair

John Stewart has worked or campaigned in the transport area for over 30 years. He is a past chair of Transport 2000. He currently campaigns mainly on aviation and noise issues.

David Buchan, Treasurer

David Buchan is a chartered accountant and spent most of his career in central government finance, including several years as Group Financial Controller at the Department for Transport. He now works part time for a charity and has experience as a trustee / treasurer of charities in other fields. His interest in and understanding of the foibles of the transport system has been formed by a lifetime of commuting by train, tube and (long ago, when it was possible) rural bus.

Muniya Barua

Muniya Barua is Director of Corporate Affairs, responsible for raising London First's external profile. She leads its campaigns, media, public affairs, events and marketing teams. Her previous senior roles include as Managing Director of Corporate Affairs at the award-winning public and communications agency Newington Communications and at the business lobby group, the CBI, where she held the roles of Director of Corporate Communications and Head of News. Muniya began her career as a business reporter at the Liverpool Daily Post before going on to produce news bulletins for ITV News London, CNN and the BBC.

Nina Bell

Nina Bell is the Managing Director of UK & Scandinavia for the Avis, Budget and Zipcar brands. She is responsible for the general management of the Company's operations and strategic direction, as well as more than 1,800 employees and overseeing revenue generation across all business sectors. Previously she held senior positions in strategy and finance including at Travelport, a global IT distribution company, where she was Vice President of Market Strategy, Planning and Strategic Programmes. She is a qualified Chartered Accountant and Chairwoman of the British Vehicle Rental and Leasing Association.

Adrian Berendt

Adrian has worked in the financial services sector for over 30 years, specialising in Finance and Risk Management. Much of his career has been in consulting on change management. Adrian has been a strategic advisor and a Trustee in the charity sector and has advised ACCA on governance, as Chair of its Governance Risk and Performance group. He has a particular interest in promoting active travel and in campaigning for road danger reduction. He leads the 20's Plenty for Us campaign for Kent.

Shamit Gaiger

Shamit Gaiger leads AECOM's Strategic Advisory in Transport. She is also a Non-Executive Director at the Department for Transport's Passenger Services and a member of the Franchising Advisory Panel to Secretary of State. Shamit has over 20 years of experience in developing national and sectoral policies and strategies for the UK in areas such as innovation, technology, sustainability, risk sharing, productivity, decision taking, skills and leadership. Most recently she led the negotiations on the Rail Sector Deal on behalf of Government.

Richard Goldson

Richard has been a lifelong railway manager, and is still very active in the railway pensions field and as specialist adviser on railways to the House of Commons Transport Committee. During his time at National Express Group in the 2000s, his duties included transport policy affairs and he was on the Transport 2000 company board for a number of years.

Charlie Hamilton

Charlie has been Managing Director of multiple transport companies, including a 100 year old bus and coach company, a special needs and school transport operator and co-founding a technology start up looking at how technology can improve surface transport for passengers as well as the environment. Charlie has recently joined Deloitte in their London consulting office as a Director. Charlie is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport.

Ian Howes

Ian has spent the last 25 years in Retail Supply Chain and Logistics, working with major retail brands in a Third Party and in house capacity. More recently he was part of the Argos Transformation into a Digital Retail Leader and is now Operations and Development Director for Sainsbury’s Argos Non Food Supply Chain. Ian has a passion for delivering outstanding customer service, continuous improvement and leading  transformational change to improve business results to improve efficiency and customer service. 

Helen Michaels

Helen is an experienced board-level advisor and coach, having worked with charities, SMEs and FTSE 100 companies in the UK and internationally. After executive roles at British Airways, Monarch Airlines, Price Waterhouse Coopers and Baker Tilly, she founded a consultancy business specialising in transformational and cultural change. Helen is also CEO and co-founder of Digi-Board who provide online governance reviews designed specifically for charities and not-for-profit organisations.

Mark Walker

With a lifelong career in the transport industry, Mark brings experience of political campaigning, media relations, legislation, major planning applications, industrial relations and business processes. Mark's association with Campaign for Better Transport as a Board member stretches back nearly 20 years, and he served as Chair of the Campaign for Better Transport Charitable Trust between 2007 and 2014.

Matthew White

Matthew is a partner at law firm Herbert Smith Freehills. He is Head of Planning in London and has more than 20 years of experience advising on all aspects of planning and development law. Matthew is a Legal Associate of the Royal Town Planning Institute, a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and a member of the City of London Law Society Planning and Environmental Law Committee and the British Property Federation's Planning Committee.
